Brno, Czech Republic

Brno Czech Republic

Brno, the Czech Republic’s second-largest city, offers a rich cultural mix and many fascinating sights. The capital of Moravia is a beautiful and charming place that still retains a small-town feel. The city is surrounded by attractive mixed forests that provide plenty of opportunities for hiking and cycling. The center is compact, and the main sights can easily be seen in a single day. Above Brno rises the impressive Špilberk (Spielberg) Castle, whose history is captivating. Today it also houses the Brno City Museum and offers excellent views over Brno and the surrounding countryside. The most striking sight in Brno’s Old Town is Stará radnice, the Old Town Hall, a splendid building where you can see two beloved Brno symbols: the Brno Dragon (Brněnský drak) and the Wheel. Náměstí Svobody, or Freedom Square, is the city’s main square. It’s a delightful place for a stroll or to sit with a drink at one of the many cafés while you watch the world go by. The square’s original appearance changed significantly after major redevelopment at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, when several buildings were rebuilt in the Neo-Renaissance style. Its dominant feature is the Baroque Plague Column dating from 1679. Charming Brno is an important tourist hub for anyone wishing to explore the natural and cultural treasures of the South Moravian region. Today, Brno is home to universities and major judicial institutions, and it offers a wide range of cultural experiences in its many theaters, museums, cinemas, and clubs.
