Navarre (Province) Spain

Navarre, officially the Chartered Community of Navarre, is an autonomous community and province in northern Spain, bordering the Basque Autonomous Community, La Rioja, and Aragon in Spain, and Nouvelle-Aquitaine in France. The capital city is Pamplona. Navarre lies in a transition zone between Green Spain and the semi-arid interior, which creates a striking variety of landscapes across the region. This transition also brings a highly variable climate, with cooler periods and heat waves alternating in summer. Winters are mild for its latitude. Navarre is one of the historic Basque territories, with Basque cultural features clearly visible in the north but almost absent in the southern areas. During the Roman Empire, the Vascones, a pre-Roman tribe, inhabited the southern slopes of the Pyrenees, including the territory that would later become Navarre. In the mountainous north, the Vascones largely avoided large-scale Roman settlement, except in some coastal areas—such as Oiasso (in what is now Gipuzkoa)—and in flatter southern zones like Calagurris (in what is now La Rioja), which were suitable for extensive Roman agriculture, including vineyards, olives, and wheat. There is no evidence of major battles or sustained hostility between the Romans and the Basques, as they shared the same enemies.
