Toledo, Spain

Toledo Spain

Toledo reached its height in the medieval era during a peaceful coexistence of Christians, Muslims, and Jews. This legacy has left a dignified, slightly mystical walled city. Toledo’s monuments crowd together in a dizzying mix of periods and styles, all held within a medieval maze of leaning houses, churches, synagogues, and mosques. The city El Greco captured in a few of his rare landscapes has changed very little over the centuries. Encircled by the Tagus River, Toledo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Spain’s most visited cities. Artifacts of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish origin still complement one another here, often within the same building. The cathedral is a lavish showcase of architectural and artistic styles. Two synagogues—Sinagoga del Tránsito and Sinagoga de Santa María la Blanca—and the Museo Sefardí are all that remain of what was once the largest Jewish community in Spain. Reminders of the Muslim presence are visible near the Puerta del Sol, a 14th-century Mudéjar gate, and the 10th-century mosque Mezquita del Cristo de la Luz. The legends and traditions of Toledo seem to awaken at sunset. Visitors can explore the city’s mysterious medieval atmosphere along its narrow streets on one of the many nighttime walking tours. It’s a captivating experience that transports travelers to another era.
